WHITEBOARDING

Polybase vs Mural

Mural is built for facilitated workshops. Polybase puts whiteboards inside the team workspace — next to the chat, tasks and docs the workshop is about.

Mural is a US-incorporated company under US jurisdiction — the CLOUD Act applies regardless of where your data is stored, and Mural does not offer a self-hosted option today. Polybase gives you EU cloud, your own VPC, or air-gapped self-host.

POLYBASE

One workspace. Every surface.

Polybase Boards live inside your workspace channels. Your retro board sits in the retro channel, next to the conversation it came from — and when the retro ends, outcomes become tracked tasks in one click. Boards support live cursors, follow and spotlight modes, connectors, templates and version history, with the whole workspace deployable to EU cloud, your own VPC, or an air-gapped server.

MURAL

Powerful. But alone.

Mural is the enterprise workshop whiteboard. Its facilitation toolkit — timers, private mode, anonymous voting, celebrations — and its deep template library for design sprints and retrospectives make it a favourite of facilitators and consultancies. But it is a standalone SaaS tool priced per member, with no self-hosted option today: after the workshop, outcomes are typically exported to Jira, discussion moves to Slack or Teams, and the mural goes quiet until the next session.

Migration

Moving from Mural.

A practical sequence for planning the change, moving the useful material and introducing the new workspace.

5 steps
  1. 01

    Map Your Active Murals

List the murals your team actually returns to — living retro boards, planning canvases, active client engagements. Most workspaces hold a few living boards and many finished workshops. Migrate the living ones; export and archive the rest.

  2. 02

Create a Channel per Team or Engagement

Set up a Polybase channel for each team, project or client engagement that runs workshops. Every channel comes with boards, chat, task management and documents — the workshop and its follow-up share one home.

  3. 03

    Rebuild Living Boards in Polybase

Recreate your recurring formats — retrospectives, planning canvases, brainstorm boards — as Polybase Boards with sticky notes, connectors and templates. draw.io diagrams import directly. We provide migration assistance during onboarding.

  4. 04

    Turn Workshop Outcomes into Tasks

This is the structural difference: after a session, convert board items into tracked Kanban tasks with assignees and due dates in one click. No exporting to Jira, no retyping action items into another tool.

  5. 05

Run the Next Retro End-to-End in Polybase

Hold your next retrospective on a board inside the retro channel: call in the same channel, notes in a linked doc, outcomes as tasks on the channel's Kanban. Once the loop closes in one place, retire the per-member Mural seats.

Why Polybase

What Polybase includes.

The additional workspace capabilities to consider when comparing Polybase with Mural.

01

The Retro Board Lives in the Retro Channel

A mural is a destination you visit; a Polybase board is part of the channel where the work happens. The board sits next to the conversation that produced it, and its outcomes become tracked tasks in one click.

02

Workshops Inside Your Communication

Mural sessions are reached through shared links, apart from your team chat. Polybase Boards open inside channels — discuss a board element in the same thread where your team already talks, before, during and after the session.

03

Whiteboard and Call in One Place

Mural workshops usually run alongside a separate Zoom or Teams meeting. In Polybase, you start the call in the same channel as the board and keep sketching together while the call floats in its own window.

04

Your Jurisdiction, Not Theirs

Mural runs as SaaS under US jurisdiction, with no self-hosted option today. Polybase deploys to our EU-region cloud, your own VPC, or a fully air-gapped server — workshop content about strategy and clients stays under your control.

05

A Workspace, Not Another Per-Member Subscription

Mural is a standalone whiteboard priced per member on top of your chat, task and video tools. Polybase Boards is a €5/user add-on to a workspace that already includes chat, tasks, calls and drive — one stack, one bill.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Common questions about switching from Mural to Polybase.

01Can Polybase match Mural's facilitation toolkit?
Not yet, and we say so plainly. Mural's timers, private mode, anonymous voting and celebrations are genuinely strong, and its template library for design sprints and enterprise workshops is far deeper. Polybase Boards cover the collaboration core — sticky notes, connectors, live cursors, follow and spotlight modes, templates, version history — and connect every outcome to tasks, chat and docs. Professional facilitators and consultancies running large formal workshops may keep Mural; teams running retros, planning and brainstorms get a more connected workflow in Polybase.
02Can I import my Mural boards into Polybase?
There is no direct Mural importer. Polybase Boards import draw.io diagrams, and we provide migration assistance during onboarding; automated importers are on the roadmap. For living boards, most teams rebuild them in Polybase — a natural moment to drop stale content and wire the remaining items into the task workflow. Finished workshops are best exported from Mural as images or PDFs and archived in Polybase Drive.
03Does Polybase have templates for design sprints and retros?
Polybase Boards ship with a growing template set covering common formats such as retrospectives and planning boards, and any board can be reused as a starting point for the next session. Mural's library is much larger and tuned for facilitated enterprise workshops — if your work depends on a wide catalogue of ready-made methods, that remains a Mural strength.
04Where does my data live, and what about compliance?
Mural is a US-incorporated company, so the US CLOUD Act applies to it regardless of where data is stored, and Mural does not offer a self-host option today. Polybase runs in our EU-region cloud, in your own VPC, or fully self-hosted and air-gapped on your servers. The product is designed around GDPR principles, with configurable role-based access control enforced at the database layer. We are not certified yet — SOC 2 and ISO 27001 are on our roadmap — and we answer security questionnaires and architecture questions today.
05How does pricing compare to Mural?
Mural is priced per member for the whiteboard alone, next to whatever you pay for chat, video and task tools. Polybase Core is €10 per user per month for chat, tasks, drive, calls and workflow automation; Boards is a €5 per-user add-on. Self-hosted and enterprise deployments are priced individually — book a demo and we will walk through your setup.
